ABOUT FINEALON

The tripeptide Glu-Asp-Arg

Pinealon is a synthetic tripeptide of glutamic acid, aspartic acid and arginine (Glu-Asp-Arg, also written EDR), one of the short peptide bioregulators studied since the 1990s in the peptide research programme of the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. Its small size and charge profile underlie research interest in how such peptides interact with DNA and regulate gene expression.

Published work has examined Pinealon in relation to free radical load in neuronal cultures, cell viability under hypoxia, and serotonin and gene expression in cells of the brain cortex. RESEARCH BACKGROUND

A short peptide studied in neuronal models

A 2011 study in Rejuvenation Research examined Pinealon in cultured cerebellar granule cells and PC12 cells exposed to oxidative stress. The peptide suppressed intracellular reactive oxygen species levels, reduced cell death and stimulated proliferative processes, with effects reported at nanomolar concentrations.

Related work from the same group has examined short peptides of the pineal gland as antioxidants, Pinealon in models of prenatal hyperhomocysteinemia, and peptide regulation of gene expression in brain tissue. Findings to date are preclinical, in cell and animal models.
